What was your video experience beforehand?

Completely new. My wife and I started our YouTube channel in April of 2021 with zero video experience. Neither one of us had a video background or any experience in that world at all.

We bought camera gear. We bought some lighting. And then we just went through the instruction book figuring out how to set resolution and aperture and what these things even mean.

I had also not opened Premiere up at all before that. We have the Adobe suite of products for our publishing business, so I figured that's the place I'm going to start.

Why’d you want to take The Big Video Course?

As our videos started progressing, we wanted do things like add music and different cuts and get a little more creative.

I’d google to figure something out in Premiere, but I was left feeling like I don’t know what I don’t know. If I knew to ask the question on Google right, I could get an answer, but sometimes I wasn’t even sure what to search for.

How has the course changed your workflow?

Prior to seeing the course, really what we did was just wing it. We’d just kind of talk things through like, OK, here are the shots. Here's what we're doing. We want an overhead shot or something like that.

But now we're actually storyboarding things out and creating a timeline of what we want to do, which in the long term helps make editing easier. Now I've got the shots instead of going, “Oh, I forgot we even did that B-roll shot.” Now it's all listed right there and it makes the editing process that much quicker for me.

Are you doing the lessons in order?

I'm jumping around a lot as I'm editing our weekly content, and now instead of using Google to search for something, I'm fortunate enough to be able to use the course and find what I need.

It’s incredibly easy to jump around because the videos are all laid out very clearly and you know what's covered in the different lessons.

I find myself going back to different things, like just yesterday, I went back to the different ways you could clip segments and move them around because I hadn’t used those tools in a while.

Does the course keep your attention?

For sure. I like that the course is casual but in depth at the same time. Other courses can be “hardcore” for lack of a better word. I mean, if you're not paying attention every second, you'll miss something. But with this course, I just I found it very easy to follow and it keeps you engaged and keeps you moving forward.

What results have you gotten?

I’ve learned faster ways to edit clips, I’ve improved my editing times, and I feel that my storytelling has improved.

The course has also given me direction to work on my editing game. I’d for sure recommend it, especially for beginners.
